Most Common Forklift Breakdowns and How to Prevent Them.

Forklifts are essential in warehouses, but heavy use can lead to breakdowns, reducing productivity and causing potential safety hazards. Understanding the most common forklift issues and how to prevent them can save time and money.

  1. Starting Issues.
When a forklift will not start and produces a clinking sound, the battery is often the culprit. This can be due to an uncharged battery, poor connections, or cold weather. For electric forklifts, overheating may occur because of a blocked radiator or low coolant levels. To prevent these issues: Charge the battery properly, check fluids and fuel, inspect for gas leaks or security features.
For internal combustion forklifts, check for fuel issues, leaks, or mechanical problems that might prevent the engine from starting.
  1. Steering Issues.
Steering problems can make forklifts difficult to manage, especially in tight spaces. Common causes include:
Low Power Steering Fluid: This can delay directional changes. Keep fluid levels within the recommended range and replace old fluid.
Worn-Out Gears and Low Tire Pressure: These can affect steering precision and safety.
Defective Steering Cylinders or Misaligned Tires**: These issues often require professional repair.
  1. Mast Failure.

The mast is critical for lifting and lowering loads. Problems here often stem from: Hydraulic Issues: Low hydraulic fluid levels make lifting difficult. Check for leaks in hoses or cylinders and maintain fluid levels.

Debris in Hydraulic Filters: Dirt can clog filters, reducing performance. Clean filters regularly to ensure smooth operation.

Overloading: Using forklifts beyond their capacity can damage the mast. Always train operators properly to handle loads within the forklift’s limits.

  1. Worn-Out Tires. Forklift tires take on heavy loads and can wear out quickly. Signs that tires need replacing such as tread wear, punctures, chunking, uneven wear, and poor maintenance can be prevented by doing regular inspections and having proper driving habits. Replace tires when necessary to maintain stability and safety.
